The Monewden Tithe Map that I saw in the Ipswich Records Office was rather disappointing because the area that I was most concerned with lies towards the edge of the parish of Monewden and thus was on the edge of the map.
Over the years the map had suffered quite a lot of damage and some of the areas of greatest interest were missing or indecipherable. I have shown these areas of poor quality in the blotchy red shading.
The present field boundaries are marked in black (the blue area shows the boundaries of the meadows on the reserve).
The approximate position of the fields and meadows on the Tithe Map are marked in red.
Therefore any existing red line lying adjacent to a black or blue line shows a boundary in existence prior to 1838.
Any red line without an adjacent black or blue line shows a boundary that has changed since 1838.
The numbers are those found on the map with a question mark showing those I had to have a reasonable guess at. These numbers together with the field names are shown in the table below along with some of my own notes.
Field sizes are in acres, roods and poles as on the Fuller Map.
| Key | Field Name | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 5? | Clopton Field. | Not definite as it should more or less correspond with the "Upper Stack Close" of Fuller's Map. On the Fuller Map the size is given as 5-3-38 but Clopton Field is recorded as 4-3-30 on the Tithe Map. Clopton Field is recorded as arable. |
| 16 | Grove Field. | Size is given as 9-1-20 and use is arable. This field is composed of the "Horse Pitle" and "The Stack Close" from Fuller's Map. |
| 17 | Square Meadow. | Size is given as 4-3-4 and use is pasture. This field is consists of the right hand side of "The Newland Close" from Fuller's Map. |
| 18 | Calspe Close. | Size is given as 7-3-36 and use is arable. This field is consists of the left hand side of "The Newland Close" from Fuller's Map. |
| 29? | Church Field. | Number uncertain but the name is a clue as it is also called this on the 1914 auctioneers map. This field would have been formed by a new boundary hedge on the field marked "The Church Meaddowe" from Fuller's Map. The use is arable. |
| 14 | Church Meadow. | This forms the other part of the field marked "The Church Meaddowe" from Fuller's Map. The size is 7-2-26 and the use is pasture. |
| 15 | Middle Piece. | This is more or less the field called "The Molhill Close" from Fuller's Map although there is a slight change in both the northern and western boundary. The size is 6-2-27 (Molhill Close was given as 5-2-22) and the use is pasture. |
| 4? | Long Field. | Number uncertain but the name is a clue as it is called "The Long Close" on the Fuller's map. the size is 6-2-3 (Long Close was 7-0-4 but was bigger as the note above shows). The use is arable. |
| 13 | Low Meadow. | The size is 2-3-39 and the use is pasture. This is part of "The Home Close" marked on the Fuller map. |
| 12? | Home Meadow. | Number uncertain but the name is a clue as it is also called this on the 1914 auctioneers map. The size is 2-2-17 and the use is pasture. This also forms part of "The Home Close" marked on the Fuller map. |
| 9 | Orchards and Stackyards. | Also marked as "Orchard" on the Fuller Map. Size is -2-8 (presumable 0-2-8) which compares with 0-2-11 by Fuller's reckoning). |
| 10 | Barns & Premises. |   |
| 11? | Pightle?. | This is almost indecipherable but the use would appear to be pasture. |
| 7? | Great Cutlens. | Again the map is very problematic here but it does largely correspond with the "Great Cutlings" from the Fuller Map apart from the southern boundary now incorporating part of the former "Haye House Close". Size is 10-24 (presumably 10-0-24) comparing with 8-2-28 from Fuller so there is an increase as expected. Use is arable. |
| 8? | Little Cutlens. | Similarly although the map is poor but it does correspond almost exactly with "Little Cutlings" from the Fuller Map. Size is 3-2-7 comparing with 3-2-1 from Fuller. |
| 6 | Deer Wood Pasture. | Size is 2-34 (presumably 2-0-34) comparing with 2-0-4 from the "Cutlings or Horse Pitle" as it is named on Fuller's Map. |
